Vintage Movie Night Featuring Anti-War Films

As we witness the ongoing horror of the war in Ukraine, independent filmmaker Richard Hall will share a variety of vintage anti-war films that draw parallels between that conflict and the Vietnam War. Don’t miss our next free Vintage Movie Night at the Takoma Park Community Center.

The screening will feature anti-Vietnam War films and ads created by peace activists, including the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom. The Yippies (Youth International Party) will take center stage in a delightfully bizarre short film satirizing the protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Richard Hall also will screen his own anti-war and mock educational short film titled “Daddy Why Do People Have Wars?”.

This film screening is part of the Takoma Park Arts series organized by the City of Takoma Park’s Arts and Humanities Division. Go to takomaparkmd.gov/arts for more info and to sign up for our e-newsletter.

Reflections From the Inside

TAKOMA PARK, MD – CorrespondARTS presents Reflections from the Inside, an exhibition spotlighting the incredible work of artists involved in the Justice Arts Coalition program. Running from February 18, 2023 until April 1, 2023, the exhibition will be open to the public at the organization’s new headquarters at 7112 Willow Ave.
CorrespondARTs is an arts engagement program started through Justice Arts Coalition in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic which brought in-person programming in prisons to an immediate halt. This program currently provides people incarcerated at the Howard County Department of Corrections with instructional packets for creating artwork in three disciplinary realms: theater, visual arts, and creative writing. Teaching artists Lori Pitts (Theatre), Carien Quiroga (Visual Arts), and Leslie Bumstead (Creative Writing) have led this program since its inception in 2020, engaging over 75 individuals at 5 Maryland prisons.
While providing incarcerated artists with an opportunity for creative expression during a period of unprecedented isolation and uncertainty, the CorrespondARTs program guides participants through a variety of themes, such as community, trust, and respect, which shape the art they produce each week. The range of styles, mediums, and voices artists use in addressing these themes is what makes Reflections from the Inside particularly unique.
A reception for this exhibition will take place on February 18, 2023 from 3-5 PM EST at JAC’s Takoma Park office Attendees will be able to see theatre performances by Voices Unbarred and hear directly from former CorrespondARTS participant Anne Kirsch. Food from Olive Lounge and refreshments will be provided.

“Poetry of Struggle and Solidarity” Poetry Reading

Four local poets will share their poetry about struggles that challenge us at home and across the world and our persistent efforts toward solidarity and equality. The poets include Serena Agusto-Cox, Sean Felix, Sara Cahill Marron, and Diana Tokaji.

Agusto-Cox is an editor for the online magazine Bourgeon and was a featured poet of the DiVerse Gaithersburg reading series. She coordinates poetry programming for the Gaithersburg Book Festival, and her work has appeared in many literary magazines and anthologies.

Felix has loved poetry for most of his life after falling in love with the spaces between words when he was 8 years old. His first book of poetry “Did You Even Know I Was Here?” was released in 2018, and he is working on his next book “Exorcism” due to be released in 2023.

Marron is the associate editor of Beltway Poetry Quarterly and the author of “Reasons for the Long Tu’m”, “Nothing You Build Here, Belongs Here”, and “Call Me Spes”. Her work has been published widely and is available at www.saracahillmarron.com.

Tokaji is a choreographer, performance artist, and author of the activist memoir “Six Women in a Cell” and the intimate resource book “SURVIVING ASSAULT–Words that Rock & Quiet & Tell the Truth”. She won the Sonia Sanchez-Langston Hughes Poetry Award in 2020.

In a supportive, inclusive, and youth-centered environment, Youth Exchange introduces young people to dance and movement basics. Youth will build collaboration and leadership skills as we explore the process of making and performing dances. Youth Exchange is led by Youth Programs Lead Artist Corina Iona Dalzell.

During each Youth Exchange class, young movers can expect:

A check-in question to reflect on how we’re feeling that day and get to know each other

A physical warm up that gets us moving and can be adapted to all bodies and abilities

A creative warm or game up that lets us improvise and make creative choices

A dancemaking activity to create solo, duet, or larger group dances

An opportunity to share our dances and practice our skills for being an audience member and sharing feedback

Youth Exchange is guided by participants’ interests and may weave in visual art, music, poetry and other art forms in addition to dance. At the end of the program, we’ll stitch together what we’ve created across the year into a larger performance shared in person or via video with family and friends.
