May 12 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Join Young Playwrights’ Theater for a one-night, drive-in movie fundraising event featuring Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella! We will be taking over the Takoma Park and Silver Spring Co-op parking lot for a night of fun. Grab some popcorn and come help us meet our fundraising goal so that we can provide arts education to 500 DC area students this year! Other attractions will include a silent auction and activities for the kids, and food will be available for purchase by local food trucks.
You can purchase car tickets ($70 each, best for 3 or more guests per car), individual car tickets ($25 each), or general admission tickets for people without a vehicle ($25 each). Children under 2 are free. Shout-Outs on the Big Screen are also available as an add-on for an additional $25.
YPT inspires young people to realize the power of their own voices. We believe creative expression and theater are valuable tools for the education, enrichment, and self-actualization of young people. We fulfill young peoples’ creative visions by hiring professional artists to guide and perform original youth-generated work for their peers and the public. YPT believes it is important that all youth have access to high-quality arts education that centers their experiences and is culturally competent and affirming for all involved. YPT believes that young people are inherently brilliant and we exist to share that brilliance with the world. About Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella:
“The Wonderful World of Disney” production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella brought Whitney Houston to made-for-television movies. Whitney and her company, BrownHouse Productions, served as executive producers on the project. The movie was initially developed for Whitney to star as Cinderella, but she decided to cast Brandy in the role and play the Fairy Godmother instead. The ABC network special featured an all-star multicultural cast and attracted a U.S. audience of more than 60 million viewers, giving the network its best Sunday night ratings in more than a decade. The production received seven Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Variety, Musical or Comedy, and won the Emmy for Outstanding Art Direction in a Variety, Musical or Comedy Special. The home video version shattered previous records to become the best-selling video of a made-for-television movie.
Enchantment pervades this teleplay—from Brandy’s engaging Cinderella to the fairy-talelike settings and the Rodgers and Hammerstein score. Prince: Paolo Montalban. Fairy Godmother: Whitney Houston. Stepmother: Bernadette Peters. Queen: Whoopi Goldberg. Directed by Robert Iscove.
Young Playwrights’ Theater’s Reels and Wheels Fundraiser is generously sponsored by GRF CPAs & Advisors and KPMG.
