Artist Talk: “REPETITION STUDIES: Thread on Canvas” BY KATHARINE HEYL

March 24, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

THE WILLOW STREET GALLERY OPENS WITH FIRST EXHIBITION OF 2023 “REPETITION STUDIES: Thread on Canvas” BY KATHARINE HEYL

WASHINGTON DC

The Willow Street Gallery in Takoma, DC is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition of 2023 featuring works by Katharine Heyl.

REPETITION STUDIES is an expression of a love of color through the insanity of everyday life. Using the thread as a medium, Katharine deconstructs the base colors by applying color theory techniques. The process of hammering hundreds of brass nails, then weaving fragile thread back and forth, results in a contrast of the materials similar to the contrast of a single color thread against a different hue, shade, or complementary. The intricate placement allows the color to express simply the best versions of itself while having a dramatic and psychological effect on the viewer.

REPETITION STUDIES will run from March 10 to 31, 2023. An opening reception will take place on Friday, March 10, 2023 from 7-9:30pm. All events are free and open to the public, with the exception of the workshop on March 26th.

There is an artist talk scheduled for Friday, March 24th from 7-8pm. The Gallery will be open until 9pm that evening.

There will also be an opportunity to sign up for a 2-hr workshop with Katharine Heyl on Sunday, March 26th to learn the technique of thread on canvas. Enrollment is limited to 6 people. Contact [email protected] for more information.

The Willow Street Gallery is a part of DC Arts Studios. The gallery’s mission is to provide exhibition opportunities for artists and DC Arts Studio members. Led by Jonathan Ege, the gallery is run by a DCAS members-only committee that oversees the schedule of exhibitions, jury selection and installation.

Katharine Heyl is a mixed media artist currently residing in Washington, DC. She received a BFA in Studio Art from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. While she focused her studies on sculpture and painting, she remains heavily influenced by color theory and the work of Josef Albers.
Heyl speaks about the ideas behind her work: “The insanity of doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, much like the repetition of behaviors in adult life. By interrupting the patterns by variations of color, new direction, and contrast, I present a final result which represents the unique paths we all take within our own repetitions and the notion that we could snap or unravel at any moment.”

REPETITION STUDIES will run thru March 31, 2023. The artist will be present for the opening reception on Friday, March 10th from 7-9:30pm. Gallery hours are Friday evenings 7-9pm and by appointment. For additional information please contact Deb Sivigny at [email protected] or phone: (202) 294-0271
