Celebrating Rhizome DC Parade and Film Screening

6 pm – Party at Rhizome at 6950 Maple Street NW

7 pm – Parade to the Takoma Park Community Center at 7500 Maple Avenue

7:30 pm – Film Screening and Concert at the Community Center

Since its founding in 2015, Rhizome DC has offered a home for experimental music, unconventional art, and eclectic performances tucked inside an unassuming house bordering downtown Takoma Park. Now we’re celebrating Rhizome with a multi-media party stretching across the city so bring your walking shoes!

Please join us at 6 pm on June 30 for a free party with music and conversation at Rhizome. Bring some noisemakers (kids can use their outdoor voices) for a festive parade at 7 pm from Rhizome to the Takoma Park Community Center at 7500 Maple Avenue.

At the Community Center, a free film screening will feature the Rhizome Is Home documentary along with a Q&A with film director Tatev Sargsyan. Using interviews and clips of previous performances, the film explores Rhizome’s representation of marginalized voices in the arts and resilience under threat of dislocation from the shape-shifting forces of gentrification.

Following the film screening, the CMW Players will take the stage for a short experimental music concert. Don’t miss it!

This event is part of the Takoma Park Arts series organized by the City of Takoma Park’s Arts and Humanities Division. The series includes free art exhibitions, film screenings, poetry readings, concerts, theater, and dance performances at the Takoma Park Community Center. Please go to takomaparkmd.gov/arts for more info and to sign up for our e-newsletter.

D.C. Sing-Along with Josh Korr

Sing in the spring with the D.C. Sing-Along — a hootenanny for the digital age. Combining the communal spirit of ’60s sing-alongs with a modern songbook, a rawk ‘tude, and an aversion to noodling, the D.C. Sing-Along is a heartwarming, cathartic, and analog good time.

HOW IT WORKS
– Bring an acoustic instrument: Anyone’s welcome to join the “band,” from fretters to flautists of all skill levels! The D.C. Sing-Along Songbook includes chords for the musicians.
– Or just bring your voice: Musical ability is NOT required. Nobody will be able to hear you sing, so don’t feel self-conscious!
– Call out your fave song from the songbook: The Beatles, Disney, Lizzo, Whitney — the D.C. Sing-Along Songbook has something for everyone!
– Bring the kids, too: As long as you’re ok with a smidge of profanity (looking at you, Alanis).

dream feeder (linde+butler+dougherty) live record taping (jazz)

dream feeder is a jazz trio consisting of Brad Linde (saxophone) Keith Butler Jr. (drums) and Nelson Dougherty (guitar). The group’s repertoire consists of compositions contributed by each member. They create a sound that is gentle, unhurried, and expansive, yet also discordant and mysterious. This performance will be recorded and later released as an album.

Brad Linde
Hailed as “the capital city’s contemporary cool king” (Giovanni Russonello, Capitalbop), Brad Linde is a saxophonist, educator, bandleader, and impresario in the Washington DC metro area. He is the director of Jazz and Creative Music at Georgetown Day School and founder/co-director of the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra.

Keith Butler Jr.
Having come of age in the cultural melting pot of Wilmington, North Carolina, Keith Butler, Jr. has deep roots in many musical traditions. Due in no small part to his versatility and creativity on the drum set, he has become a mainstay of the Washington D.C. music scene, performing with some of the area’s top bandleaders, including Brian Settles, Saltman/Knowles, Amy K. Bormet, Sarah Hughes, Luke Stewart, Elijah Jamal Balbed, Alex Hamburger, and Stephen Arnold. Butler was also a founding member of adventure music ensemble The New World, and is a member/composer of avant-jazz quartet ¡FIASCO! Butler has composed scores for DC productions of the plays Vietgone, and Venus (a staged reading,) both directed by Natsu Onoda-Power as well as Classic Red, a new play by DC playwright Abigail Chase. Butler released his debut album, Greener Grasses, in April of 2019, and is currently in the finishing stages of his second album. Butler is also a 2022 graduate of the MFA in Music Composition program at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Nelson Dougherty
A Washington, DC-based jazz guitarist, composer and educator. He finds the intersection between differing genres of music, often using guitar pedals to create vast soundscapes. He currently co-leads ¡FIASCO! which has released two albums, Arson (2020) and Post-Truth (2021). Both of which were named #1 on Capitol Bop’s list Best D.C. Jazz Albums in their respective years. Nelson’s most recent collaboration is the duo, Tyson (with Saxophonist Tyler Cassidy). Their recent release, Found Audio, explores ambient and soundtrack-like textures.
