Main Street Takoma

The Main Street Takoma program, an initiative of the Old Takoma Business Association, is a community-based effort aimed at keeping and increasing the vitality of the Old Takoma commercial district -- from the Takoma Junction in Maryland to the Takoma Theatre in Takoma, DC.

Our Main Street vision for Old Takoma is to create:

small_Kittner_080522__0927.jpgA small town in a big city. Welcoming and diverse, practical yet fanciful. With places to meet, shop, learn, eat, create and rejuvenate.

In the spring of 2004 OTBA spearheaded the City of Takoma Park's successful bid to become a Main Street Maryland community. We will apply for designation for the Takoma DC portion of our commercial area when it is next offered by the District of Columbia. Volunteers from both Takoma Park and Takoma DC, business owners and residents alike, are currently working on several projects, from facade improvements to promotional events, to help us reach our vision.

The success of the Main Street Takoma effort depends on the active partcipation of Takoma businesses, community organizations and Takoma residents. We need volunteers to serve on each of the four Main Street committees -- Design, Economic Restructuring, Organization, and Promotion-- and to work on the projects of each committee.

For information on how you can be involved, contact the OTBA Executive Director, by email or phone at 240.253.4229.
